Approaches!

Post by dwschaefer »

It would be great to have approaches now that we have a great new 2020 GPS!!

Thanks...

I agree it would be great. But it is a huge undertaking. There's a reason no one is challenging Garmin for the lower cost market. New companies will never recover their R&D costs if Garmin competes against them.

So...here it is a year later, and I stand corrected! Of course it remains to be seen how much resistance may come from the FAA for a “non-TSO’d but manufacturer says it meets the performance standards” box.
Note to Jeff: I’d be happy to help with beta testing. I have a 420W installed so I could do A-B testing. But, the other installed gps is the one in the SkyRadar adsb. Do you think that has sufficient accuracy (and data output compatibility, error checking, etc) to drive the grt approach software?

No, I doubt the SkyRadar GPS computes the exact types of integrity and accuracy data that is supposed to be used with the approach. There are very few GPS chips that do and they wouldn't have a reason to spend extra to put one in a receiver-only unit. The other problem is the GDL90 standard format that transfers this data from the SkyRadar is somewhat limited for navigation purposes and doesn't include the actual integrity and accuracy numbers, only the ADS-B categories.

Is there a timeline for the next release of the approach software? I'm hoping we'll soon see RAIM and turn alerting, as well as more complete IAF selection.

We've got a great start, hoping it keeps going!

It was pushed back by Remote EIS functions, so probably mid to late June. My priorities will be to display information (and/or alerts) about the accuracy/integrity so you know if you're flying off good GPS data and within the limits of the approach.
